The Basics of Dance
What is Dance?
Dance can be defined as a series of movements that match a piece of music. Although dance seems as an easy activity, It is far from easy. Dance requires strenghth, flexibility, and musicality. Along with these important factors, dance requires endless hours of practice in order to perfect a specific step of movement. Ballet is the most important style of dance, as it is required for all the other styles of dance. This includes, Lyrical, Contemporary, Tap, Pointe, and even hip-hop. In order to learn more about these specific styles of dance...see below.
My Background:Dance
Since I was about 3 years old, I have always loved Dance. The first studio that I danced at was known as Susan Woods, which was located in Reading. However, now it has moved. Anyways, at Susan Woods I did Ballet and Tap for a few years. When I was a bit older, I decided to move to J and D Dance Academy. Today, I am fifteen years old and I still dance at J and D Dance Academy. Although I have tried many other sports, including soccer, Dance has always been the constant sport in my life. I especially love dance because I can be with my friends and it takes my mind off homework. At J and D, I take Ballet, Contemporary, and Jazz. Along with these required classes, I am also a part of the performance group.
Ballet
Ballet is a style of dance that originated many years ago during the 15th century. Ballet is the foundation of dance and requires beautiful technique and perfect posture. The Ballet barre is used for dancers during warmup activites, where teachers usually give combinations. Ballet also requires many years of training in order to master the given steps and moves. Most importantly, flexibilty is a key aspect of ballet.Lyrical
Lyrical and Contemporary styles of dance is a style that combines both ballet and Jazz techniques. Lyrical is usally a bit smoother and a bit faster than ballet but slower than jazz. Lyrical consists of movements that are used to express feelings such as love or anger. Lyrical also is more free flowing compared to other styles, and requires more body movement.Tap
Unlike Ballet or Tap, Tap is solely about the movement of feet and tap shoes. Tap is a series of movement, either hard or easy, that can be done slowly or more fast paced. Although this may seem easy, it is far from easy. Tap requires endless hours of practice in order to perfect certain sounds and movements. Each tap must be clear and concise or else the sound wont be right. Look below to find examples of tap sounds and moves....

Jazz is a series of movements such as high kicks and faster movements compared to lyrical or ballet. Usually, Jazz dance is performed to more upbeat music and showcases a dancers flexibilty as well as performance quality. Look below for some jazz moves...Dance Shoes
