So far, the Power Searching with Google unit in class has helped me to better understand Google and the tools that it offers. In the first class, learning how to filter images based on color and other characteristics was helpful. Filtering the image results in Google can help you to find what you are looking for in a more effective way. If you are searching for specific graphs or tables, clicking on which color you want can help you to find graphs that will have the information you need. Most graphs or tables are black, white, or blue. In addition, the image filter can help to find older photos that may have been in black and white. Secondly, in the first class, I learned how to find text on a webpage effectively. To find text on a webpage, you use Control-F or Command-F. When you use the control-F or command- F a small search box appears on the page. Therefore, you can type in a specific word or term that you want to find on that page. In future, I will most likely use this feature when I am doing a research project or homework.
In the second class, I also learned many useful techniques. This includes, learning more about the panel that Google gives you on the right hand side of the page. If you search for a well known term, person, or place this panel can help you have a more concise search. Often times, Google will pull the information in the panel from Wikipedia or another search depending on the query. Before, I didn’t exactly know what the panel meant, however, now I do. In addition, in the second class, I learned that using the word ‘define’ in front of a search term can help to find better results when you are searching for the meaning of a specific word. Placing the word ‘define’ in front of your search term is more effective than just typing the word alone. After completing two lessons in Power Searching with Google, I have begun to understand Google more and how it works.
